What’s Up with Online Auctions?

Over the past few months, we have been working on including online auction opportunities for both buyers and sellers.  Hopefully, this will explain a little bit of what we are doing and why.

Estate Online Auctions-

During these types of auctions, the items are usually left in the house and photographed.  The items are put up for online bidding through our website and the winners pick up their items at the end of the auction.  The bidding period is usually about 10-14 days.  At the end of the auction, customers pay with a credit/debit card.  A pickup time frame is assigned within 24-48 hours of the end of the auction.  The winning bidders pickup their items at the location, and are responsible for carrying and loading the items into their vehicle.

Online Pre-Bidding for Thursday Nights-

If a customer is not able to attend the auction on a Thursday night, we offer the opportunity to bid on certain items online before the auction.  The items are uploaded onto our website by Monday evening and bidders can register and bid online.  Bidding for these items closes at 5:00pm before the auction begins at 6:00pm.  The high bidder’s information (the current high bid, that bidder’s maximum bid, name, and contact information), are brought to the live auction to compete against bidders who are physically at the auction.  The highest bidder (whether online pre-bids or in-person bidders) will win the items.

Online Simulcast Auction-

Online simulcast allows bidders to “attend” the auction from their computer during the auction.  This includes the pre-bidding, but the online bidders are able to bid on the items when they are actually being sold.  This option is not as common, and is not used very often during our Thursday night auctions.

Online auction options help us to market and sell the items to the highest bidder available.  We are doing our best to create an atmosphere at the live auction that is conducive to bidding and winning items.  If you would like more information on how the online auction systems work, please contact us and we can walk you through it.

Summer Break at Doerr Auctions

Hello everybody!

The crew here at Doerr Auction & Realty, Inc wanted to let you know what we’ll be working on during the summer break.  As many of you know, we will not be having our regular consignment auctions until sometime in early August.  During this time, here’s what we will be doing…

Online Auctions-

While our consignment center won’t be accepting consignments as usual, we WILL be having online auctions.  We are accepting quality consignments at our facility by appointment after talking with an auctioneer.  We are able to sell many things online, so if you’d like to sell something (or many things), give us a call to speak with one of our auctioneers.  We already have a bunch of great items that we will be selling through an online auction over the next few weeks, so be watching for that shortly!

We have a large estate arriving at the auction center on Friday morning to be prepped for selling online.  This includes some beautiful furniture, sports equipment, and even a golf cart!  We also have a large lot of office furniture, a large format printer, and several very nice file cabinets arriving on Wednesday of next week (July 8th).  We have a large assortment of household items, furniture, art, and collectibles at our consignment center ready to be auctioned off online over the next few weeks.

Finally, we have an on-site online auction (where the items will be picked up at the location of the auction, not the Auction Center) scheduled to begin on Monday, July 6th.  It will run through Tuesday, July 14th with the pickup on Thursday, July 16th.  This will have some very nice furniture as well as many other items!

Scheduling Consultations-

Our auctioneers will be taking a little bit of time off (hey, they’ve worked really hard this spring to sell as much merchandise as possible, so they definitely deserve a break).  However, they WILL be scheduling and conducting consultations during the summer break.  With many people moving, down-sizing, and needing our services, we aren’t going to completely drop out of serving all of the wonderful people in southern Illinois.

We have lots of options during the summer break for auctions including:
On-Site Auctions
Online Auctions (with On-Site Pickup)
Online Auctions (with Consignment Center Pickup)
Pickup Services Scheduled for late July/early August

Picking Up Merchandise-

We will be picking up merchandise from consignors to be sold either online throughout the summer or at one of our August Treasure Hunt Thursday auctions.  If you are needing items picked up during the summer, please contact us and we can schedule that pickup.

Maintenance and Cleaning-

During the summer break, we have a chance to do extra cleaning and maintenance at our facility here in Vergennes, IL.  We have already done a deep cleaning on all of the floors preparing for all of the items entering the building to be sold online over the next few weeks.  We will also be doing some various maintenance projects to help keep our auction center looking nice and functioning appropriately.

The summer break at Doerr Auctions is a needed rest for the auctioneers at Doerr Auction & Realty, Inc, but the work does not stop.  We continue to provide services to the great people of Southern Illinois through our many auction services offerings.  Give us a call or stop by the auction center to catch up, see our online auctions in action, or get some information on buying or selling at upcoming auctions.

See you soon!

History of American Fostoria Glass

HISTORY OF THE FOSTORIA GLASS COMPANY  1887 – 1986

The Fostoria Glass Company began operations in Fostoria, Ohio, on December 15, 1887. This site was chosen because natural gas at a recently opened field in the area had been offered at a very low cost to attract new industries. However, the field was so short-lived that in 1891, Fostoria moved to Moundsville, West Virginia, where there was an abundance of gas and coal, and other needed materials were close by.

During its first ten years, Fostoria made pressed ware, but early in the 20th century Fostoria realized the importance of developing fine quality blown stemware.

In 1924 the company was one of the first to start a program of national advertising, and the first to produce complete dinner services in crystal. Besides their regular line of blown, etched and pressed patterns they did custom work such as providing glass with government seals for officials in Washington. All the presidents from Eisenhower through Reagan ordered glassware from them. At one time Fostoria was the largest maker of handmade glassware in the United States, employing nearly 1000 people.  The AMERICAN pattern, introduced in 1915, is still being produced by Lancaster Colony (who bought the Fostoria company in 1983), making it the most successful pattern in the history of glass making. Fostoria’s business peaked in 1950 when they made over 8 million pieces of glass.

In 1986, after struggling with an outmoded plant and foreign competition, Lancaster Colony was forced to close the Fostoria Company, ending nearly 100 years of glass making.
